Hockney 's Largest Artwork

David Hockney is known for his colorful paintings of Los Angeles swimming pools and canyon roads, and many of those works were made at the home studio in the Hollywood Hills where Hockney resided on and off from the late '70s until his recent death.

His house not only gave him a new perspective on the city. It also gave him a new perspective on art.

Architect Jeffrey Daniels collaborated with Hockney to turn a California ranch house into a reflection of Hockney's vision.

"He actually showed me some of the paintings that he was working on at the time, and he wanted to capture that in the architecture," Daniels recalls.

The artist rejected a the suggestion of a boxy building with minimalist white walls, says Daniels: "He took a look at this first proposal, and he said, 'This is great, but do you think we could have a few more mad angles?'”
